On Design
What is it about a specific design that draws our attention? How much does the material used play a part in our choices to find the “right” item when we are on the hunt for a new addition to our collection?
Whether it is by conscious choice or by a subconscious “gut” response, we are drawn to items based on their superficial design. To some, that is symmetry, to others it is the image they project.
Are there limitations to design based on the materials being used? There are limitations depending on the intent of the item or its “essence”. Waterproof properties yields a different selection of materials versus an all leather classical item. The rituals needed to be performed on a leather item is a double edge sword due to some being attracted to the maintenance of the leather or, for the same reasons, leather being seen as antiquated.
Do we stray away from the classical essence of an item or material if we use newer innovations? Do these “franken-material” composites keep up with the allure and prestige of a well crafted item? Simplicity is sometimes seen as a drawback, but what if that is in place to keep an item true to its nature?
The goal here is to keep it simple and avoid complexities as a way to be honest with ourselves. In todays day and age, we have grown accustomed to mystery materials and single use items that are harmful to our health and the environment. Why not strive for heirloom quality items to serve you well within this one life that you have? Enjoy the experience from every facet of life from writing a letter to a loved one with quality stationery items or enjoy a well made leather satchel that will never let you down on your adventures. Enjoy the simple virtues that our predecessors once did and take a moment to realize where you are and imbue your humanity within that moment of time and space. There will be other moments similar to that, but never the exact same.
